So, yesterday I had a sub. I was able to talk with her for a couple of minutes in the beginning of the day, and she seemed pretty normal and with-it. The with-it is the most important because of my students and the school environment. The students are very quick to take advantage of anyone (weird, right?) and they don't trust any 'new' person. I was confident she would survive.
She didn't. She left after 3rd period almost in tears. I didn't find out right away, but close enough to the time that I was in shock and a bit worried about the rest of the day. Luckily, I had some great teachers within the building that were able to keep control and order for my last two classes.
What I also found confusing is that my 'better' classes were the ones that sent her crying. Sad.
I hope that this will show me in a more positive light... such as they will see how hard my students and classes are and give me a bit of grace in evaluations... which I do think they know. (I do have the highest amount of referrals for students to go the office in the school!) They say it is weak classroom management. I say it is my students. Whatever, Tomato - Tamato. Or whatever that saying is!
I can't decide if I want to start Tuesday by scolding them... or by ignoring the issue... or by making it fit into our new short story unit where the students have to consider point of view. Part of me says a great teacher would do the last option. Then again, I am a first year teacher and not a great one - yet.
Well, time to start my lesson planning. I hope I can find some engaging lesson ideas in this head that is not ready to start thinking!
